Postville Board of Education Organizational Meeting

September 18, 2017

Superintendent Duggar called the organizational meeting of the Postville Board of Education to order at 7:06 p.m. on Monday, September 18, 2017, with the following members present: Jamie Smith, Staci Malcom, JoAnn Jacobs, Tony Gericke.  Absent:  Jeff Cox.

The oath of office was administered to re-elected board member Staci Malcom and to newly elected board member Tony Gericke.

The floor was opened for nominations for School Board President. A nomination Jamie Smith was offered and he was unanimously elected as school board president.

The floor was opened for nominations for School Board Vice-President. A nomination Jeff Cox was offered and he was unanimously elected as school board vice president.

The board established the 2nd Monday of each month at 6:30 pm in the Fine Arts Center Lobby for regular board meetings. ne Arts Center Lobby

The following appointments were made:

*Board Secretary/Treasurer Melissa Fettkether (Oath was administered)

*Allamakee County Conference Board – Tony Gericke

*Clayton County Conference Board – JoAnn Jacobs

*Fayette County Conference Board – Tony Gericke

*Winneshiek County Conference Board – Jamie Smith

*Legislative Network – JoAnn Jacobs

*IASB Delegate Assembly – JoAnn Jacobs

The board designated the Postville Herald as the official publication for the district.

The board designated Ahlers & Cooney as legal counsel for the district.

Motion by Gericke, second by Malcom, to establish the district’s official depositories as Freedom Bank and Fidelity Bank and Trust with a limit of $4,000,000 for Freedom Bank and a limit of $2,500,000 for Fidelity Bank and Trust.  Carried unanimously.

The concept of Learning and Leadership was presented by Superintendent Duggar.

A schedule will be created in advance for staff and groups to present to the board.

The board discussed public comments at board meetings.  There will be no change to current procedures.

Superintendent Duggar reported on a good start to year, great teachers hires, and enrollment looks to have increased.

Elementary Principal Ryan Zurbriggen reported on:

*Good feedback from staff for the start of the year.

*BD program has been working out well.

*Elementary building leadership team has grown and everyone has a chance to be heard.

*Clips form Cora B. Darling Elementary in the newspapers is representing the building well.  *Students have been training in behavior expectations.

*First Pirate Pride assembly with take place this week.

Junior-Senior High School Principal Brendan Knudtson reported on:

*Food Evolution movie in Elkader was attended.

*8th grade will be attending Rendezvous Days.

*Homecoming week was a wonderful success, thanks to Mrs. Shea, capped off with a win at the football game.

*Jean Douglass Lauderdale, Postville graduate from 1946, donated $10,000 to use for new and upgraded science equipment.

*The launch of the new website is coming, which will be ADA compliant.

*The DNR – Yellow River Forest State Sawmill donated about a $1000 worth of lumber for the shop class.

Curriculum Director Jennifer Schutte reported on:

*Star 360 Accelerated Reading program was added in addition to Core Curriculum being taught.

*A summary report for 7th and 8th grade reading scores was provided and discussed.

The October Meeting for the Postville Board of Education will be held on October 9, at 6:30 PM.

Motion by Malcom, second by Gericke, to adjourn at 7:50 pm.  Carried unanimously.
