“Sink or Float” in 8th-grade Technology class

students working on boat challenge

Recently, the 8th graders in Mrs. Lenth's Technology classes conducted a boat challenge. Mrs. Salinas, our Tech Integrationist, help create the challenge for the students since some of them had prior experience with 3D printing. Their goal was to give students the opportunity to design a product using Tinkercad and the 3D printers. For this challenge, the boats had to meet certain dimensions and see which boat could hold the most cargo (pennies). An optional challenge was stability to see how many paper clips could be hung on the side of the boat before capsizing. During the challenge, students enjoyed seeing their boats "float" and the friendly competition among classmates. Winners from each 8th-grade section enjoyed a prize of Gatorade & candy, plus bragging rights!
