Students in Advanced Interactive Media evaluated 3D models of boats to determine capacity and stability during their 3D unit. Capacity is determined by the number of pennies that a boat could carry before capsizing. Stability was the number of paper clips that could be attached to the sidebars before capsizing. After studying the models, students designed and printed their original boats. Recently, we completed our Boat Challenge and the winning boat for capacity was designed by Caleb Hughes. Caleb's boat could carry 25 pennies! For the stability challenge, we had a tie for the winner, Alex Garcia and Angel Sandoval. Both of these boats had 12 paper clips attached to the sidebars before capsizing. We appreciate the use of the 3D printers and the students enjoyed the friendly competition as they utilized design principles.
